On March 17, 2025, rumors spread that protesters from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) burned a ‘chadar’ with Islamic inscriptions, sparking violence in Nagpur. The protestors had demanded the removal of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Misinformation spread rapidly, leading to stone-pelting and arson in several parts of the city.
Attack on Police and Government Response
The violence injured 33 police personnel, including three Deputy Commissioners of Police. The Chief Minister has vowed strict action against those who attacked law enforcement officers. He emphasized that his government will not rest until all culprits are held accountable.
