Have you ever turned on Netflix just looking for some loud, explosive action to switch your brain off after a long day? That is exactly how me and my sister ended up watching War Machine last night, and let me tell you, we had an absolute blast. Throughout the entire movie, both of us were on the very edge of our seats. We were literally shouting at the screen, yelling “Run! Run! Run!” because the pacing simply does not let you breathe.
While watching it, a massive wave of nostalgia hit me. It instantly reminded me of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic film Predator, and we will definitely talk about why that is very soon. If you miss the old days of heavy, testosterone-filled cinema, this streaming hit is exactly what you need.
A Heartbreaking Promise Born in Blood
The absolute best part about War Machine is that it gives our main hero, Candidate 81 (played by Alan Ritchson), a deeply emotional reason to fight. The movie hits you hard right from the opening sequence in Afghanistan. We see 81 working as a combat engineer when he reunites with his younger brother, played by Jai Courtney.
The two brothers share an incredibly close bond and make a solemn promise to each other. They vow that they will both survive the war, return home, and successfully pass the brutal Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP) together. To seal this pact, they even show off matching “DFQ” (Don’t Fuckin’ Quit) tattoos.
But the film shatters your heart immediately after. Their convoy is suddenly hit by a violent, overwhelming Taliban ambush. In a matter of minutes, everyone in the unit is wiped out. In a devastating, emotional sequence, 81 refuses to leave his dying brother behind. Despite suffering a severe knee injury himself, he hoists his brother’s bleeding body onto his shoulders. He heroically carries him through the crossfire for miles, only to collapse from exhaustion just a few hundred feet away from the safety of the military base. When he wakes up in the hospital, he learns his brother didn’t make it. This trauma is the exact reason why he pushes himself like a literal “Superman” through the elite training two years later—he is fulfilling a dead brother’s final wish.

Pure Predator Vibes in the Dark Woods
This heartbreaking backstory sets up the second phase of the film, which mirrors Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic Predator. Just like that classic movie, you have an elite squad of heavily armed, muscular soldiers trapped in a dense forest during their final test, ominously called “The Death March.”
What was supposed to be a standard military navigation exercise instantly turns into a terrifying alien nightmare. A mysterious, building-sized mechanical creature crashes into the woods. Before the soldiers even realize what is happening, they are stripped of communications and hunted down one by one.
The fear is incredibly real because the recruits are only carrying blank training rounds! This creates an insane level of helplessness. Me and my sister were completely stressed out, watching these tough soldiers completely outmatched by an unstoppable, extraterrestrial force hiding in the dark trees.
Alan Ritchson is the Ultimate Action Machine
Director Patrick Hughes, who previously gave us The Hitman’s Bodyguard, knows exactly how to utilize a massive star. Alan Ritchson is built like a brick wall, and he carries this movie entirely on his massive shoulders. If you love him in Reacher, you will absolutely adore his performance here. He brings a raw, muscular energy to the screen that feels refreshingly honest.
However, Ritchson does not just punch things. He actually gives a surprisingly grounded emotional performance as a grieving brother carrying massive PTSD. Standing alongside him, Jai Courtney and Stephan James do a fantastic job as fellow soldiers trapped in the nightmare. They act like a real, terrified brotherhood under extreme pressure.
Big, Loud, and Beautifully Ridiculous
Let’s be totally honest here. War Machine is not trying to win an Oscar for its deep philosophical writing. The second half of the script throws absolute logic out of the window. You will see normal human beings trying to fight a giant sci-fi cyborg with basic fists and rocks. The action sequences are heavily over-the-top, loud, and occasionally completely ridiculous.
But that is exactly why the movie works so well! In a digital world crowded with self-serious, confusing sci-fi movies, War Machine is refreshingly simple. It knows it is a popcorn entertainer, and it flexes its action muscles proudly. The visual effects of the killer machine are sharp, ominous, and look fantastic on a big television screen.
