A Corrupt Court and a Desperate Prayer

The story of the film begins on a very grounded and emotional note. An old, helpless father (played by Indrans) travels all the way from Kerala to Chennai with his sick daughter (Anagha). They carry a bag full of gold, hoping it will pay for her medical treatment. However, as soon as they step into the big city, they get robbed. They turn to the legal system for help, but instead of justice, they encounter a nightmare.

The Metropolitan Magistrate court in Chennai is under the complete control of Baby Kannan (played by RJ Balaji). Baby is a highly corrupt and cunning lawyer who treats the legal system like his personal business. He and his gang intentionally drag out simple court cases just to squeeze money out of poor clients. They even bribe judges to get judgments in their favor. Left with no money, no hope, and a failing system, the heartbroken father cries out to Lord Karuppuswamy, the ultimate deity of justice.

When God Enters the Courtroom

This is exactly where the film takes a wild, fantasy turn. Hearing the painful cry of the innocent father, Lord Karuppuswamy decides to take human form. He steps down to Earth to fight the battle for humanity, quite literally, as a lawyer in the court. The idea of a deity walking into a broken, dirty courtroom to argue a case is brilliant on paper. It sets up an exciting conflict of God versus corrupt human officials.

Whenever Suriya takes on the Karuppu avatar, the movie shifts into “God Mode.” The visuals change completely, using striking reddish tones that represent a divine portal. It feels like watching a grand, Indian version of a dark, supernatural dimension. Suriya brings a massive screen presence, and he clearly enjoyed playing this ferocious, larger-than-life protector.

The Brilliant First Half Versus the Lost Second Half

The director deserves full praise for the first half of the film. He successfully connects the audience with the extreme pain of the father and daughter. The initial conversation between God and the corrupt lawyer creates a lot of tension. The intense courtroom drama and a wild pre-interval sequence raise the expectations sky-high.

However, the screenplay completely loses its track in the second half. Once the director allows God to win the initial battle, the story runs out of gripping ideas. It becomes very hard to believe that a small-time corrupt human like Baby can stand against a powerful, omnipresent deity. The villain characters start looking too insignificant, and the film resorts to illogical conflicts, like villains casually confronting God with guns and hand-to-hand combat.

Great Performances Shortchanged by Script

Suriya holds the entire movie together with his loud, energetic, and unapologetic comeback performance. Trisha plays Preethi, an honest young lawyer. While she performs sincerely, her character ultimately falls victim to the weak writing usually given to female leads in hero-centric films.

Indrans delivers a truly heartbreaking and powerful performance as the defeated father, holding the emotional core of the film alongside Anagha. RJ Balaji is sincere as the antagonist, but his character feels a bit ridiculous later on. It is quite funny that Balaji gave himself more slow-motion entries than the actual hero of the film! On the technical side, young music director Sai Abhyankkar works overtime. His background score adds massive power to the action scenes, even if the actual songs are forgettable.

A Mindless Masala Entertainer with Huge Box Office Records

Despite its massive logical blunders and weak writing in the second half, Karuppu has clicked big time with the masses. It treats fans with heavy pop-culture references, calling back to films like Leo, Jai Bhim, and even a Singham-style entry. It has already shattered records to become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026, raking in over ₹142 crore worldwide in its opening weekend. If you are a fan of high-energy mass entertainers like Akhanda, this movie will satisfy your craving for mindless big-screen fun.

That’s it for now.
