Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Nidhi Tiwari has been appointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Private Secretary. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) officially announced her appointment on March 29, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved her nomination, and she will assume her new role with immediate effect.

 

Who is Nidhi Tiwari?

Nidhi Tiwari is a 2014-batch IFS officer. She hails from Mahmoorganj, Varanasi, which is also Prime Minister Modi’s parliamentary constituency. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, she served as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi. She cleared the 2013 UPSC Civil Services Examination, securing 96th rank.

Career in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)

Tiwari started working in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in 2022 as an Under Secretary. She was later promoted to Deputy Secretary on January 6, 2023. Her responsibilities in the PMO mainly involved working in the Foreign and Security division. She reported directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

 

Work in the Ministry of External Affairs

Before joining the PMO, she worked in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Her expertise in international relations and security matters played a crucial role in shaping India’s foreign policy. She handled key issues related to nuclear energy, national security, and international defense agreements.

 

Role and Responsibilities as Private Secretary
