Early Morning Downpour Causes Chaos
Early Monday morning, Mumbai heavy rain disruption causes widespread chaos, heavy rains pounded Mumbai and its suburbs, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls. In just six hours, the city received over 300 mm of rain, bringing normal life to a standstill. Many commuters were stranded as key roads and low-lying areas bore the brunt of the impact.
Train and Flight Services Disrupted
Train services in Mumbai faced severe disruptions due to waterlogged tracks. The Central Railway had to suspend services on the Main line Down and Up Fast line between CSMT and Thane. Many express trains were stranded, leaving passengers stuck. Authorities provided water, food, and other assistance to those affected. Pumps were later used to drain water from the tracks, and some services resumed.
The Mumbai airport also faced significant issues. Low visibility and waterlogging caused the cancellation of around 50 flights and the diversion of 27 flights. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport advised passengers to check flight schedules before leaving home and ensured extra seating and water provisions.
Schools and Colleges Closed
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. This decision was taken to ensure student safety amid the heavy rains and waterlogging.
Severe Waterlogging in Many Areas
Areas like Andheri, Kurla, Bhandup, King’s Circle, Vile Parle, and Dadar reported significant waterlogging. Videos and images shared on social media showed knee-deep water in many locations, making it difficult for residents to navigate the streets. BEST buses were diverted from their regular routes due to waterlogged roads.

Government Response and Safety Measures
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde personally led a cabinet meeting to understand and manage the unfolding crisis. He also visited the municipal corporation’s control room to monitor the response efforts. The BMC advised residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. They urged people to call emergency numbers for immediate assistance.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, residents in Raigad and Ratnagiri are bracing for more challenges, as these districts remain under a red alert until Tuesday afternoon. An orange alert is in place for Thane and Palghar on Tuesday. IMD Director Sunil Kamble reported that Mumbai recorded 270 mm of rainfall between 2 am and 6 am on Monday. The city is expected to see more heavy rains in the coming hours.

The heavy rains have had a significant impact on daily life in Mumbai. Traffic jams across the city, especially on highways and key roads not submerged in water, reported widespread disruptions. Commuters faced long delays during the morning rush hours. The weather department has also warned of a high tide of 4.2 meters around 2 pm, which could worsen the waterlogging situation.
Animal Rescues Amid Rains
Rescuers saved more than 30 animals, including pets, strays, and wildlife, from Mumbai and surrounding districts. The forest department and wildlife welfare organizations received over 60 distress calls in 24 hours.
