A piece of sad news is coming from Sag Harbor, Long Island – the beloved singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett passed away at 76 at his home on September 1st, 2023. Buffett had been fighting Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years. He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,”

“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

A statement posted to Buffett’s official website and social media pages said late Friday.

Best known for his music, which often portrays a lifestyle described as “Island escapism,” Buffett’s songs attracted a loyal fanbase of admirers who proudly referred to themselves as “Parrotheads.”

Born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, James William Buffett began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee, during the late 1960s as a country artist. He recorded his first album, the country-tinged folk-rock record Down to Earth, in 1970.

With a music career extending over five decades, Buffett, including hits such as “Margaritaville (1977),” which ranks 234th on the Recording Industry Association of America’s list of “Songs of the Century,” “Come Monday (1974),” and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere (2003),” held the record for eight consecutive weeks at the top of the country charts. Additionally, it earned the 2003 Country Music Association Award for Vocal Event of the Year, marking Buffett’s first-ever award in his three-decade-long recording career.

The White House issued a statement from President Joe Biden on the passing of Jimmy Buffett –

“Jill and I send our love to his wife of 46 years, Jane; to their children, Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron; to their grandchildren; and to the millions of fans who will continue to love him even as his ship now sails for new shores,”

President Biden said in a statement. “We had the honor to meet and get to know Jimmy over the years, and he was in life as he was performing on stage – full of goodwill and joy, using his gift to bring people together.”

Former President Bill Clinton wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Buffett’s “music brought happiness to millions of people. I’ll always be grateful for his kindness, generosity, and great performances through the years.”

That’s it for now.
