G20 Summit:

Founded on September 26, 1999 (23 years ago) in response to several world economic crises, the G20, or Group of 20, is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU). It actively addresses major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

Since 2008, the G20 has convened at least once a year, organizing summits involving each member’s head of government or state, finance minister, or foreign minister, along with other high-ranking officials. The European Union is represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank. Additionally, the summits extend invitations to other countries, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations, some of which have a permanent standing.

G20 Summit India 2023:

Scheduled for this year, India will host the G20 2023 Summit for the first time, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi serving as the chair. The presidency, beginning on December 1, 2022, will be held by India until the summit in the third quarter of 2023. Following the Bali summit’s conclusion, a ceremony took place where Indonesian President Joko Widodo handed over the G20 Presidency gavel to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2022, Indonesia held the presidency.

Six agenda items have been proposed by India for the G20 meeting in 2023

The original plan designated Italy for the G20 summit in 2022 and India in 2021. At the 2018 G20 Buenos Aires summit in Argentina, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that he had requested Italy to host the summit in 2021, allowing India to host it in 2022 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. Italy, acknowledging progress in bilateral relations, agreed to let India host the G20 summit in its place in 2022.

However, following a request from Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, India swapped its G-20 presidency with Indonesia. This exchange occurred because Indonesia, in addition to its G-20 role, would also chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2023.

That’s it for now.
