The Delhi Election 2025 have marked a historic shift in the city’s political landscape. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a massive victory, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 10-year rule and forming a government in Delhi after 26 years.

Celebrations erupted at the BJP headquarters, where leaders and workers gathered to mark the long-awaited return to power. The party credited its success to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, strong campaign strategies, and anti-incumbency against AAP.

BJP Celebrates Historic Win in Delhi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a landslide victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections, ending 10 years of AAP governance. This marks BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 26 years, last ruling the state in 1998.

As counting progressed, BJP workers gathered at the party headquarters, celebrating the victory with fireworks, sweets, and slogans. Senior leaders, including Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva, Union Minister Harsh Malhotra, and National Vice President Baijayant Panda, were present to oversee the developments.

BJP’s performance was historic, as it gained 44 seats compared to the 8 seats in 2020. AAP’s seat count dropped significantly from 62 to 14, marking its worst performance since coming to power in 2013. Congress, which had been absent from Delhi’s Assembly since 2015, finally made a comeback with 4 seats.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Defeat: AAP Faces a Major Setback

The biggest shock for AAP came with the defeat of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. He lost to BJP leader Parvesh Verma by over 4,000 votes.

Several other AAP ministers and senior leaders also lost their seats:

After the defeat, Arvind Kejriwal accepted responsibility and addressed party workers, saying:

“We respect the people’s mandate. AAP will continue to work for the people and improve where we fell short.”

Political experts believe that multiple factors led to AAP’s downfall, including:

Congress Revives With 4 Seats, But Still Struggles

The Congress Party, which had zero seats in 2015 and 2020, made a small comeback, winning 4 seats. Arvinder Singh Lovely, former Delhi Congress chief who later joined BJP, played a key role in Congress’s internal challenges.

The four Congress winners were:

Despite the minor revival, Congress still lags far behind its former Sheila Dikshit-era dominance (1998-2013). Party leaders stated that their focus will now be on the 2029 General Elections.

BJP’s Next Steps: Who Will Be Delhi’s Next Chief Minister?

BJP has not announced its Chief Minister candidate yet, following its tradition of choosing a leader after the results. Several strong contenders are in the race:

1. Parvesh Verma – Defeated Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi

Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, has gained strong political ground after his victory against AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. He won by over 4,000 votes, making him a key figure in BJP’s success.

His victory is significant because the New Delhi constituency has historically produced Chief Ministers. Sheila Dikshit (1998, 2003, 2008) and Arvind Kejriwal (2013, 2015, 2020) won from this seat before becoming CM.

Mr. Verma previously won West Delhi’s parliamentary seat in 2014 and 2019. He has also served on the Standing Committee on Urban Development and the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of MPs.

2. Vijender Gupta – Three-Time Rohini MLA

BJP veteran Vijender Gupta secured a third consecutive victory from the Rohini Assembly seat, defeating AAP’s Pardeep Mittal by nearly 37,000 votes.

Mr. Gupta has been associated with BJP since his college days at Delhi University. His political journey began with municipal elections, and he was first elected MLA in 2015. In 2013, he contested against Arvind Kejriwal and Sheila Dikshit from the New Delhi seat but finished third.

3. Kailash Gahlot – Former AAP Minister Turned BJP Leader

Kailash Gahlot, a former Transport and Environment Minister in the Arvind Kejriwal government, switched to BJP in November 2024. He played a crucial role in BJP’s strategy for the elections.

He won from the Bijwasan constituency, defeating AAP’s Surender Bhardwaj by over 8,000 votes. Before joining BJP, he was an MLA from Najafgarh (2015, 2020) and handled key departments in the Delhi government. BJP leader Manohar Lal called him a strong Jat leader who will boost BJP’s influence in Delhi politics.

4. Arvinder Singh Lovely – Former Congress Leader Joins BJP

Arvinder Singh Lovely, a former Delhi Congress chief, switched to BJP in 2024. He won the Gandhi Nagar constituency, defeating AAP’s Naveen Chaudhary by 12,748 votes.

Lovely has been active in Delhi politics since his student days at Delhi University. He first won from Gandhi Nagar in 1998 and remained undefeated until 2013. Under Sheila Dikshit’s government, he held several key Cabinet positions.

He left Congress before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, opposing the party’s alliance with AAP and the selection of “outsiders” as candidates.

Other Potential Candidates for CM

1. Manoj Tiwari – Strong Purvanchali Leader

Though Manoj Tiwari did not contest in the 2025 Assembly elections, he played a crucial role as a star campaigner. As a North East Delhi MP, he enjoys massive support among the Purvanchali community in Delhi.

His leadership could help BJP gain ground in Bihar’s upcoming elections, making him a valuable choice for the party.

2. Virendra Sachdeva – BJP’s Delhi Chief

Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva is another strong contender. He recently made headlines for taking a dip in the polluted Yamuna River during Chhath Puja to highlight the alleged failure of the Delhi government in cleaning the river.

He is the first Punjabi leader to lead BJP’s Delhi unit since O.P. Kohli in 2010. His leadership has helped BJP strengthen its position in the national capital.

What’s Next for Delhi?

With BJP’s victory, Delhi is set to see a new government after a decade of AAP rule. The official Chief Minister announcement is expected soon.

AAP’s loss marks a major shift in Delhi politics, and BJP will now focus on governance, development, and key issues affecting the capital’s residents.

The coming days will be crucial as BJP finalizes its leadership and government formation.

Delhi’s Future Under BJP

With a clear majority, BJP is set to take charge of Delhi’s governance. Key policy focus areas are expected to include:

With AAP now in opposition, political dynamics in Delhi will shift significantly. All eyes are now on BJP’s official CM announcement in the coming days.
