Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated every year on April 14. It marks the birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and the first law minister of independent India. In 2025, the nation celebrates his 135th birth anniversary with great respect and enthusiasm.

A National Tribute to the Dalit Icon

Across India, people remember Dr Ambedkar’s contribution to law, equality, and social justice. From Tamil Nadu to Uttar Pradesh, tributes pour in. Cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Mumbai, and Delhi observe the day with various events and public activities.

In Delhi, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena declared April 14 a public holiday. In several states, government and private banks remain closed, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and West Bengal. Courts, post offices, and PSUs also remain shut.

Ambedkar Jayanti 2025 Celebrations Across India

In Uttar Pradesh, the state government planned grand events to celebrate this special day. On April 14, a major cultural programme titled “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman” will be held at the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow.

Folk artists from Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India will perform. These performances will showcase Babasaheb’s life, his values, and his contributions. A special archival exhibition will also be set up, featuring rare documents and records of his life and work.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will offer floral tributes at his statue in Hazratganj. Later, he will attend celebrations at the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahasabha campus, where multiple cultural activities will take place.

What’s Open and Closed Today?

April 14 is a public holiday in many parts of India. All government and private schools, colleges, and universities stay closed today. Most government offices also remain shut, as the central government has declared it a national holiday.

However, private companies and offices may choose to remain open. The holiday does not apply mandatorily to them. Meanwhile, essential services like pharmacies, ration shops, general stores, and healthcare centers continue operations as usual.

The NSE and BSE stock markets are closed today and will resume trading on Tuesday, April 15.

 

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Marathon in Lucknow

On April 13, a day before his birth anniversary, the BJP organised the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Marathon in Lucknow. The marathon began at KD Singh Babu Stadium and ended at the 1090 crossing. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak greeted runners and praised their spirit.

BJP workers lined the route, showering flowers on the participants. Leaders like Dharampal Singh and Neeraj Singh spoke at the event, highlighting Babasaheb’s life and vision. They encouraged everyone to follow his teachings and promote unity in society.

Winners of the marathon were awarded cash prizes. Awadesh Chaudhary won the first prize of ₹50,000, Anupam received ₹25,000 for second place, and Pankaj Yadav won ₹15,000 for third. Seven others received consolation prizes of ₹5,000 each.

New Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh

To mark Ambedkar Jayanti, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a new wildlife sanctuary. Named Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Abhyaran, the sanctuary will cover 258.64 square kilometers in Sagar district.

The reserved forest areas of Banda and Shahgarh Tehsils will form this sanctuary. This will be the 25th wildlife sanctuary in the state.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the sanctuary would strengthen conservation efforts. It will protect forests, wildlife, and the environment. Moreover, it is expected to promote tourism and provide job opportunities to locals.
